天Thiên 下hạ 有hữu 道đạo, ， 卻khước 走tẩu 馬mã 以dĩ 糞phẩn. 。
Thiên hạ có Đạo, thì ngựa dùng vào việc vun phân ruộng.
When the Dao prevails in the world, they send back their swift horses to (draw) the dung- carts.

天Thiên 下hạ 無vô 道đạo, ， 戎nhung 馬mã 生sinh 於ư 郊giao. 。
Thiên hạ không Đạo, ngựa chiến sinh ngoài thành.
When the Dao is disregarded in the world, the war-horses breed in the border lands.

禍Họa 莫mạc 大đại 於ư 不bất 知tri 足túc. ；
Không họa nào lớn bằng không biết đủ.
There is no guilt greater than to sanction ambition; no calamity greater than to be discontented with one’s lot;

咎Cữu 莫mạc 大đại 於ư 欲dục 得đắc. 。
Không hại nào lớn bằng muốn được của.
no fault greater than the wish to be getting.

故Cố 知tri 足túc 之chi 足túc, ， 常thường 足túc 矣hĩ. 。
Cho nên biết cho mình là có đủ, thời luôn luôn đủ.
Therefore the sufficiency of contentment is an enduring and unchanging sufficiency.
