使Sử 我ngã 介giới 然nhiên 有hữu 知tri, ， 行hành 於ư 大Đại 道Đạo ， 唯duy 施thi 是thị 畏úy 。
Nếu ta có chút hiểu biết, ta sẽ đi theo Đại Đạo, và sợ hãi sự phô trương.
If I were suddenly to become known, and (put into a position to) conduct (a government) according to the Great Dao, what I should be most afraid of would be a boastful display.

大Đại 道Đạo 甚thậm 夷di ， 而nhi 民dân 好hiếu 徑kính. 。
Đại Đạo thì rộng rãi thanh thản mà con người lại thích đi những con đường nhỏ hẹp.
The great Dao (or way) is very level and easy; but people love the by-ways.

朝Triều 甚thậm 除trừ, ， 田điền 甚thậm 蕪vu, ， 倉thương 甚thậm 虛hư. ；
Triều đình lộng lẫy, nhưng ruộng nương hoang phí, kho lẫm trống trơn.
Their court(-yards and buildings) shall be well kept, but their fields shall be ill-cultivated, and their granaries very empty.

服Phục 文văn 綵thái, ， 帶đới 利lợi 劍kiếm, ， 厭yếm 飲ẩm 食thực, ， 財tài 貨hóa 有hữu 餘dư, ；
Ăn mặc sang trọng, đeo kiếm sắc, ăn uống chán chê,
They shall wear elegant and ornamented robes, carry a sharp sword at their girdle, pamper themselves in eating and drinking, and have a superabundance of property and wealth;

是thị 謂vị 盜đạo 夸khoa, 。 非phi 道Đạo 也dã 哉tai. ！
đó là đường lối của phường đạo tặc, chứ đâu phải đường lối của Đại Đạo.
such (princes) may be called robbers and boasters. This is contrary to the Dao surely!
