民Dân 不bất 畏úy 威uy, ， 則tắc 大đại 威uy 至chí. 。
Dân mà không sợ cái đáng sợ, tất cái sợ lớn sẽ đến.
When the people do not fear what they ought to fear, that which is their great dread will come on them.

無Vô 狎hiệp 其kỳ 所sở 居cư, ， 無vô 厭yếm 其kỳ 所sở 生sinh. 。
Đừng khinh chỗ mình ở, đừng chán đời sống mình.
Let them not thoughtlessly indulge themselves in their ordinary life; let them not act as if weary of what that life depends on.

夫Phù 唯duy 不bất 厭yếm, ， 是thị 以dĩ 不bất 厭yếm. 。
Vì không chê nên không chán.
It is by avoiding such indulgence that such weariness does not arise.

是Thị 以dĩ 聖thánh 人nhân,
Cho nên thánh nhân
Therefore the sage

自tự 知tri 不bất 自tự 見kiến, ；
biết mình, và không cầu người biết,
knows (these things) of himself, but does not parade (his knowledge);

自tự 愛ái 不bất 自tự 貴quý. 。
yêu mình mà không cần người trọng.
loves, but does not (appear to set a) value on, himself.

故Cố 去khứ 彼bỉ, 取thủ 此thử. 。
Cho nên bỏ cái kia giữ cái này.
And thus he puts the latter alternative away and makes choice of the former.
