民Dân 不bất 畏úy 死tử, ， 奈nại 何hà 以dĩ 死tử 懼cụ 之chi? ？
Khi dân không sợ chết, làm sao lấy cái chết làm cho họ sợ được.
The people do not fear death; to what purpose is it to (try to) frighten them with death?

若Nhược 使sử 民dân 常thường 畏úy 死tử, ， 而nhi 為vi 奇kỳ 者giả, ， 吾ngô 得đắc 執chấp 而nhi 殺sát 之chi, ， 孰thục 敢cảm. ？
Nếu khiến được dân sợ chết, mà bắt kẻ phạm pháp giết đi, thì còn ai dám phạm pháp nữa.
If the people were always in awe of death, and I could always seize those who do wrong, and put them to death, who would dare to do wrong?

常Thường 有hữu 司ty 殺sát 者giả 殺sát. 。
Thường có đấng Tư sát, có quyền giết người.
There is always One who presides over the infliction death.

夫Phù 司tư 殺sát 者giả. ， 是Thị 大đại 匠tượng 斲trác. ；
Nay ta lại thay Ngài mà giết, thì có khác nào muốn đẽo gỗ thay thợ mộc đâu?
He who would inflict death in the room of him who so presides over it may be described as hewing wood instead of a great carpenter.

夫Phù 代đại 大đại 匠tượng 斲trác 者giả, ， 希hi 有hữu 不bất 傷thương 其kỳ 手thủ 矣hĩ. 。
Muốn thay thợ mà đẽo gỗ, khó mà thoát bị thương tật.
Seldom is it that he who undertakes the hewing, instead of the great carpenter, does not cut his own hands!
