天Thiên 下hạ 皆giai 知tri 美mỹ 之chi 為vi 美mỹ, ， 斯tư 惡ác 已dĩ; 。
Thiên hạ đều biết đẹp là đẹp, thế là xấu vậy;
All in the world know the beauty of the beautiful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what ugliness is;

皆giai 知tri 善thiện 之chi 為vi 善thiện, ， 斯tư 不bất 善thiện 已dĩ. 。
đều biết tốt là tốt thế là không tốt vậy,
they all know the skill of the skilful, and in doing this they have (the idea of) what the want of skill is.

故Cố 有hữu 無vô 相tương 生sinh, ，
bởi vì có không sinh ra nhau
So it is that existence and non-existence give birth the one to (the idea of) the other;

難nan 易dị 相tương 成thành, ，
dễ khó thành tựu lẫn nhau,
that difficulty and ease produce the one (the idea of) the other;

長trường 短đoản 相tương 較hình, ，
ngắn dài tạo thành lẫn nhau,
that length and shortness fashion out the one the figure of the other;

高cao 下hạ 相tương 傾khuynh, ，
trên dưới lộn lạo ra nhau,
that (the ideas of) height and lowness arise from the contrast of the one with the other;

音âm 聲thanh 相tương 和hòa, ，
thanh âm hòa hợp với nhau,
that the musical notes and tones become harmonious through the relation of one with another;

前tiền 後hậu 相tương 隨tùy. 。
sau trước theo nhau.
and that being before and behind give the idea of one following another.

是Thị 以dĩ 聖thánh 人nhân 處xử 無vô 為vi 之chi 事sự, ， 行hành 不bất 言ngôn 之chi 教giáo. ；
Cho nên thánh nhân dùng Vô vi mà xử sự, dùng bất ngôn mà dạy dỗ.
Therefore the sage manages affairs without doing anything, and conveys his instructions without the use of speech.

萬Vạn 物vật 作tác 焉yên 而nhi 不bất 辭từ, ，
Vạn vật hoạt động mà vẫn im lìm;
All things spring up, and there is not one which declines to show itself;

生sinh 而nhi 不bất 有hữu, 。
sống động mà không (đòi quyền) sở hữu;
they grow, and there is no claim made for their ownership;

為vi 而nhi 不bất 恃thị, ，
lao tác mà không cậy công;
they go through their processes, and there is no expectation (of a reward for the results).

功công 成thành 而nhi 弗phất 居cư. 。
công thành mà không lưu luyến.
The work is accomplished, and there is no resting in it (as an achievement).

夫Phù 唯duy 弗phất 居cư, ， 是thị 以dĩ 不bất 去khứ. 。
Không lưu luyến nên mới không mất.
The work is done, but how no one can see; ‘Tis this that makes the power not cease to be.
