上Thượng 善thiện 若nhược 水thủy. 。
Bậc trọn lành giống như nước.
The highest excellence is like (that of) water.

水Thủy 善thiện 利lợi 萬vạn 物vật 而nhi 不bất 爭tranh, ，
Nước khéo làm ích cho muôn loài mà không tranh giành,
The excellence of water appears in its benefiting all things, and in its occupying, without striving (to the contrary),

處xử 衆chúng 人nhân 之chi 所sở 惡ố, ， 故cố 幾cơ 於ư 道Đạo. 。
ở chỗ mọi người đều ghét, cho nên gần Đạo.
the low place which all men dislike. Hence (its way) is near to (that of) the Dao.

居Cư 善thiện 地địa, ，
Ở thì lựa nơi chốn;
The excellence of a residence is in (the suitability of) the place;

心tâm 善thiện 淵uyên, ，
âm hồn thời thâm trầm sâu sắc;
that of the mind is in abysmal stillness;

與dữ 善thiện 仁nhân, ，
giao tiếp với người một mực nhân ái;
that of associations is in their being with the virtuous;

言ngôn 善thiện 信tín, ，
nói năng thành tín;
that of words is in their trustworthiness;

正chính 善thiện 治trị, ，
lâm chính thời trị bình;
that of government is in its securing good order;

事sự 善thiện 能năng, ，
làm việc thời có khả năng;
that of (the conduct of) affairs is in its ability;

動động 善thiện 時thời. 。
hoạt động cư xử hợp thời.
and that of (the initiation of) any movement is in its timeliness.

夫Phù 唯duy 不bất 爭tranh, ， 故cố 無vô 尤vưu. 。
Chính vì không tranh, nên không ai chê trách oán thán.
And when (one with the highest excellence) does not wrangle (about his low position), no one finds fault with him.
