The exhibition of the qualities of the Dao
Bậc hoàn thiện xưa siêu vi, huyền diệu, thâm thúy, thông suốt; thâm thúy khôn lường.
The skilful masters (of the Dao) in old times, with a subtle and exquisite penetration, comprehended its mysteries, and were deep (also) so as to elude men’s knowledge.
Vì khó lường nên gượng tả hình dung.
As they were thus beyond men’s knowledge, I will make an effort to describe of what sort they appeared to be.
Các ngài thận trọng như mùa đông đi qua sông;
Shrinking looked they like those who wade through a stream in winter;
các ngài e dè sợ láng giềng bốn bên;
irresolute like those who are afraid of all around them;
kính cẩn như khách;
grave like a guest (in awe of his host);
lạnh lùng như băng tan;
evanescent like ice that is melting away;
mộc mạc chất phác như chưa đẽo gọt;
unpretentious like wood that has not been fashioned into anything;
man mác như hang núi;
vacant like a valley,
hỗn mang như nước đục.
and dull like muddy water.
Ai có thể đục mà nhờ tĩnh lại dần dần trong.
Who can (make) the muddy water (clear)? Let it be still, and it will gradually become clear.
Ai có thể yên mà nhờ động lại dần dần linh hoạt.
Who can secure the condition of rest? Let movement go on, and the condition of rest will gradually arise.
Kẻ giữ đạo không muốn đầy.
They who preserve this method of the Dao do not wish to be full (of themselves).
Chỉ vì không muốn đầy, nên mới che dấu và chẳng đổi mới.
It is through their not being full of themselves that they can afford to seem worn and not appear new and complete.
