企Khí 者giả 不bất 立lập, ；
Kiễng chân lên, không đứng thẳng được.
He who stands on his tiptoes does not stand firm;

跨khóa 者giả 不bất 行hành. ；
Xoạc cẳng ra không đi được.
he who stretches his legs does not walk (easily).

自Tự 見hiện 者giả 不bất 明minh; ；
Tự coi là sáng, nên không sáng.
(So), he who displays himself does not shine;

自tự 是thị 者giả 不bất 彰chương; ；
Tự xem là phải, nên không hiển dương.
he who asserts his own views is not distinguished;

自tự 伐phạt 者giả 無vô 功công; ；
Tự kể công, nên không có công.
he who vaunts himself does not find his merit acknowledged;

自tự 矜căng 者giả 不bất 長trường. 。
Tự khoe mình, nên không hơn người.
he who is self- conceited has no superiority allowed to him.

其Kỳ 在ư 道Đạo 也dã, ， 曰viết ： 餘dư 食thực 贅chuế 行hành, 。
Đứng về phương diện Đạo mà nói, thì đó là những «đồ thừa việc thải».
Such conditions, viewed from the standpoint of the Dao, are like remnants of food, or a tumour on the body, which all dislike.

物vật 或hoặc 惡ố 之chi. ， 故Cố 有hữu 道Đạo 者giả 不bất 處xử. 。
Cho nên người có Đạo không thiết.
Hence those who pursue (the course) of the Dao do not adopt and allow them.
