以Dĩ 道Đạo 佐tác 人nhân 主chủ 者giả ， 不bất 以dĩ 兵binh 強cưỡng 天thiên 下hạ. 。
Ai coi Đạo là vua (thiên hạ) không dùng binh mà bức thiên hạ.
He who would assist a lord of men in harmony with the Dao will not assert his mastery in the kingdom by force of arms.

其Kỳ 事sự 好hiếu 還hoàn. 。
Chiến tranh có vay có trả
Such a course is sure to meet with its proper return.

師Sư 之chi 所sở 處xử, ， 荊kinh 棘cức 生sinh 焉yên. 。
Chỗ quân sĩ đóng, gai góc sẽ sinh.
Wherever a host is stationed, briars and thorns spring up.

大Đại 軍quân 之chi 後hậu, ， 必tất 有hữu 凶hung 年niên. 。
Sau trận chiến lớn, ắt có những năm tai ương.
In the sequence of great armies there are sure to be bad years.

善Thiện 有hữu 果quả 而nhi 已dĩ; ，
Cho nên người khéo sẽ giải quyết (trận chiến) một cách mau lẹ,
A skilful (commander) strikes a decisive blow, and stops.

不bất 敢cảm 以dĩ 取thủ 強cường; 。
mà không ỷ sức mạnh;
He does not dare (by continuing his operations) to assert and complete his mastery.

果quả 而nhi 勿vật 矜căng; ，
giải quyết mau lẹ mà không khoe khoang;
He will strike the blow, but will be on his guard against being vain

果quả 而nhi 勿vật 伐phạt; ，
giải quyết mau lẹ mà không tự khen;
or boastful

果quả 而nhi 勿vật 驕kiêu; 。
giải quyết mau lẹ mà không kiêu căng;
or arrogant in consequence of it.

果quả 而nhi 不bất 得đắc 已dĩ; ，
giải quyết mau lẹ vì bất đắc dĩ;
He strikes it as a matter of necessity;

果quả 而nhi 勿vật 強cường. 。
giải quyết mau lẹ mà không muốn trở nên mạnh mẽ.
he strikes it, but not from a wish for mastery.

物Vật 壯tráng 則tắc 老Lão, ，
Vật lớn mạnh ắt già;
When things have attained their strong maturity they become old.

是thị 謂vị 不phi 道Đạo, ，
Như vậy là trái Đạo;
This may be said to be not in accordance with the Dao:

不phi 道Đạo 早tảo 已dĩ. 。
trái Đạo sẽ mất sớm.
and what is not in accordance with it soon comes to an end.
