道Đạo 常thường 無vô 名danh. 。
Đạo thường không tên, mộc mạc.
The Dao, considered as unchanging, has no name.

樸Phác 雖tuy 小tiểu, ， 天Thiên 下hạ 莫mạc 能năng 臣thần 也dã. 。
Tuy nhỏ, dưới trời không ai bắt được nó phải thuần phục.
Though in its primordial simplicity it may be small, the whole world dares not deal with (one embodying) it as a minister.

侯Hầu 王vương 若nhược 能năng 守thủ 之chi, ， 萬vạn 物vật 將tương 自tự 賓tân. 。
Nếu bậc vương hầu giữ được nó, vạn vật sẽ thuần phục;
If a feudal prince or the king could guard and hold it, all would spontaneously submit themselves to him.

天Thiên 地địa 相tương 合hợp, ， 以dĩ 降giáng 甘cam 露lộ, ，
trời đất hòa hợp làm cho móc ngọt rơi xuống.
Heaven and Earth (under its guidance) unite together and send down the sweet dew,

民dân 莫mạc 之chi 令lệnh, 而nhi 自tự 均quân. 。
Dân không phải sai khiến, mà chia đều nhau.
which, without the directions of men, reaches equally everywhere as of its own accord.

始Thủy 制chế 有hữu 名danh, ， 名danh 亦diệc 既ký 有hữu. ，
Bắt đầu phân chia, mới có tên.
As soon as it proceeds to action, it has a name.

夫Phù 亦diệc 將tương 知tri 止chỉ; ， 知tri 止chỉ 所sở 以dĩ 不bất 殆đãi. 。
Đã có tên phải biết chốn dừng. Biết chốn dừng mới không hại.
When it once has that name, (men) can know to rest in it. When they know to rest in it, they can be free from all risk of failure and error.

譬Thí 道Đạo 之chi 在tại 天thiên 下hạ; ， 猶do 川xuyên 谷cốc 之chi 與ư 江giang 海hải. 。
Đạo sánh với thiên hạ, như suối khe với sông biển.
The relation of the Dao to all the world is like that of the great rivers and seas to the streams from the valleys.
